It was originally commissioned by Marcus Agrippa in the reign of Augustus, rebuilt by Emperor Hadrian in 126 AD, and served as a temple to the Gods and a burial ground for several important kings. Since 609 AD it has been a Catholic Church, and the final resting place of Raphael.
