Caravaggio’s Legacy: The Caravaggisti

Host: The Wallace Collection
Date: Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd March
Discover the immediate influences of Caravaggio’s revolutionary paintings on artists in Italy and beyond. Some Caravaggisti – a term used for those 17th-century artists who embraced his style within their work – knew Caravaggio directly, whilst others only knew of him. Dr Sarah Pearson will reveal how, further afield, Caravaggio’s style was transmitted through intermediary artists which often obscured its origins altogether. Characterised by a sense of theatre and drama, light effects and unidealised realism, we’ll learn how Caravaggio’s dynamic work had a profound effect on artistic production not only in his home country, Italy, but across western Europe.
