Private Art Collections of Rome

Host: Smithsonian Associates
Date: May 2nd
Time: 00.30am to 2.30am

Many of Rome's greatest art treasures are displayed in the private collections of historically influential Roman families. Not surprisingly, some of these families produced popes such as Innocent X (Pamphilj), Urban VIII (Barberini), and Martin V (Colonna). Fortunately, a number of these art collections are now museums open to the public.

Rocky Ruggiero, an expert in Renaissance art, explores four of these private collections—the Doria Pamphilj Gallery, the Barberini Palace Museum, the Villa Farnesina, and the Colonna Palace—and explains how the artworks held there helped shape the Italian Renaissance.

Note: This program is part of a new quarterly series, Lesser-known Museums of Rome, where Rocky Ruggiero spotlights collections of Rome's sometimes-overlooked museums.
